The inspiration came from a traffic incident.

“I was cut off in traffic and I was mad and because that person wasn’t paying any attention to me,” Bob Hoffman said. “Then, I had an epiphany, and the epiphany was that I wasn’t paying attention to anything else around me, either.”

The encounter inspired Hoffman, 42, to start the ePIFanyNOW Pass It Forward movement. The East Lansing resident organizes events for volunteers to perform random acts of kindness.

Hoffman will receive the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Community Service Award today for his work with ePIFanyNOW.

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 100th Annual Dinner today at the Lansing Center. The chamber will present awards for community service, outstanding small business and legacy.

Hoffman is the public relations manager at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts at Michigan State University. He has also been recognized by for his volunteer work with awards from the Junior League of Lansing and Capital Area United Way. A recent ePIFanyNOW event in Lansing drew the attention of the “CBS Evening News.”

At Pass It Forward events, Hoffman and volunteers share ideas for projects, then spend the afternoon completing tasks such as helping an elderly neighbor with snow shoveling or yard work, picking up the tab for someone else’s groceries at the store or using carpentry skills to help a neighbor with quick home improvement projects.

One of Hoffman’s favorite acts of kindness was a trip volunteers took to the Lansing City Rescue Mission.

“People bought stamps, envelopes, paper and pens and took them to the (Lansing City Rescue) Mission so that the people that were there could write to their loved ones,” Hoffman said.

Kelly McCord of Lansing brought her two children to an ePIFanyNOW event. They decided to surprise nurses in the maternity ward of Sparrow Hospital with flowers.

"Just the way they cared for me (was amazing)," McCord said.

McCord delivered her two children at Sparrow and had always meant to send a token of thanks.

“Now that (my kids are) getting a little bit older, I'm trying to bring them to do things,” she said. “We're really trying to get them out in the community to volunteer.”

ePIFanyNOW gave her family a structured opportunity to give back.

Hoffman said the energy at ePIFanyNOW parties is contagious. He hopes it inspires people to give more time to help others, and offers those that give often a sense of appreciation.

“A lot of people do this all the time,” he said. “What happens at an ePIFanyNOW party that’s a little bit different is that you come back and share your story, which is incredible. When you are there you just feel on top of the world. I think it gives motivation to do more of it because you realize how good it feels to give. A lot of people give all the time and they don’t necessarily get credit for it. I believe that everyone needs to be validated.”

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 21, 2012 — FDA SETS PDUFA DATE OF APRIL 16, 2012

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - Nuvo Research Inc. (TSX: NRI), a
specialty pharmaceutical company dedicated to building a portfolio of
products for the topical treatment of pain and the development of its
immune modulating drug candidate WF10, today announced an update to
Pliaglis regulatory approval in the U.S. and the E.U.

U.S. Regulatory Status

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted the
supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) for Pliaglis for review. The
sNDA was submitted by Galderma Laboratories, LP, the U.S. subsidiary of
Galderma Pharma S.A. (Galderma). Nuvo has licensed worldwide marketing
rights for Pliaglis to Galderma, a global pharmaceutical company
specialized in dermatology. The FDA has set a PDUFA (Prescription Drug
User Fee Act) date of April 16, 2012 for action on the submission.

Pliaglis is an FDA-approved topical local anesthetic cream which uses
the Company's proprietary phase-changing topical technology. It
provides local analgesia for superficial dermatological procedures,
such as dermal filler injection, pulsed dye laser therapy, facial laser
resurfacing and laser-assisted tattoo removal. Pliaglis was initially
approved by the FDA in June 2006, but was voluntarily removed from the
U.S. market by Galderma in 2008, due to manufacturing issues at
Galderma's third-party contract manufacturer. Galderma subsequently
transferred Pliaglis manufacturing to Galderma and has resolved the
manufacturing issues. Galderma and Nuvo believe that the sNDA
addresses the manufacturing site change and the resolution of the
manufacturing issues. Galderma plans to launch the marketing and sale
of Pliaglis in the U.S. in the second half of 2012.

E.U. Regulatory Status

In July 2011, a Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for Pliaglis
was submitted to 17 E.U. countries using the decentralized submission
procedure and is under active review. The MAA requests marketing
approval for producing local dermal anaesthesia on intact skin in
adults prior to superficial dermatological procedures. Nuvo expects to
receive a response in the first half of 2012 and Galderma plans to
launch in a number of E.U. countries in the second half of 2012.
Pursuant to Nuvo's license agreement with Galderma, Nuvo is entitled to
receive milestone payments totaling US$6.0 million from Galderma once
Pliaglis is launched in the first three E.U. countries.

"We are extremely excited and optimistic about the anticipated approval
and launch of Pliaglis in the U.S. and E.U.," said Dr. Bradley Galer,
President, Pain Group. "The milestone and royalty revenues from
Pliaglis, together with our growing Pennsaid® royalties and revenues from our recently launched Synera® product, will help support our efforts to build Nuvo into a successful
specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the treatment of pain."

Rest of the World Regulatory Status

Pliaglis was recently approved for sale and marketing in Argentina.
Galderma was advised by Health Canada on February 10 2012 that its New
Drug Submission for Pliaglis has been accepted for review. In
September 2011, Galderma filed marketing applications in Switzerland
and Brazil and is expected to file for marketing approval in other
countries around the world, including additional South American
countries, select Asian countries, South Africa, and Australia.

Nuvo will receive revenue from worldwide Pliaglis sales via royalties
that average in the mid-teens.

About Nuvo Research Inc.

Nuvo Research is a publicly traded, Canadian specialty pharmaceutical
company, headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. The Company is
building a portfolio of products for the treatment of pain through
internal research and development and by in-licensing and acquisition.
The Company's product portfolio includes Pennsaid, Pliaglis and
Synera. Pennsaid, a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
(NSAID), is used to treat the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis of
the knee(s). Pennsaid is sold in the United States by Mallinckrodt
Inc., a Covidien company, in Canada by Paladin Labs Inc. and in several
European countries. Pliaglis is a topical local anesthetic cream which
provides topical local analgesia for superficial dermatological
procedures. The Company has licensed worldwide marketing rights to
Pliaglis to Galderma Pharma S.A., a global specialty pharmaceutical
company specialized in dermatology. Synera is a topical patch that
combines lidocaine, tetracaine and heat, approved in the United States
to provide local dermal analgesia for superficial venous access and
superficial dermatological procedures and in Europe, for surface
anaesthesia of normal intact skin. Nuvo currently markets Synera in
the United States and its licensing partner, EuroCept International
B.V., has initiated a pan-European launch of Synera (under the name
Rapydan) in several European countries. The Company is also developing
the compound WF10, for the treatment of immune related diseases.

Israeli pharmaceutical company Sol-Gel Technologies says it nailed down a $27 million development and licensing deal with an as-yet unnamed U.S. pharmaceutical company regarding a "major" dermatology drug.

Sol-Gel, launched 15 years ago, declined to disclose the name of its partner, though coyly stated that it already has a $25 million deal with the same outfit. (Any guesses as to which lucky company it is?)

While Sol-Gel wouldn't name names, it did detail the agreement itself, which includes an upfront payment plus licensing fees and development payments when the partnership reaches certain milestones. Plus, the unnamed partner has also agreed to bankroll development costs and to pay Sol-Gel royalties for any net sales.

It's likely that whatever "Big Pharma" company Sol-Gel is dealing with sees a way to stand out in the marketplace with Sol-Gel's delivery tech. The company's controlled-release drug delivery system places the treatment into an inert, clear silica microcapsule shell, in a system designed to make a topical dermatology drug more effective and also work with fewer side effects because of the steady, gradual release of the treatment.

Big Pharma companies are facing the loss of patent protection for some of their big sellers and a variation using a new drug delivery mechanism can help them maintain market presence with a unique treatment variation. That makes drug delivery tech companies particularly seductive partners. Bend Research, for example, has signed licensing partnership deals in recent months with Eli Lilly ($LLY), Merck ($MRK) and Bristol-Myers Squibb ($BMY), giving them access to its spray-dried dispersion technology and other drug formulation know-how.

Sol-Gel says it is in the middle of a Phase II study in the U.S. for a topical rosacea therapy as well as developing a number of other dermatology products.

- here's the release

FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Azam Anwar, M.D. and Clay Cockerell, M.D., founders of TopMD, Inc., a
pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, and sells
over-the-counter therapeutic skincare products, have announced that
Steve W. Clark, the former chief executive of leading U.S. dermatology
companies, Galderma Laboratories and Coria Laboratories, has joined the
company’s TopMD Skin Care subsidiary as its Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Clark has over 40 years of industry experience and was widely
credited for launching well-known and highly successful skincare brands
such as Cetaphil® and CeraVe®. Mr. Clark is, in fact, one of few lay
persons to be recognized as an honorary member of the American Academy
of Dermatology based on his contribution to dermatology. He is joined at
TopMD Skin Care, Inc., by David Bass, who boards as chief operating
officer. With over 25 years of industry experience, Mr. Bass served in
business development with Galderma Laboratories and was vice president
and treasurer of Alcon, the world’s leading eye-care company.

“I am very pleased to have been appointed Chief Executive Officer of
TopMD Skin Care,” said Mr. Clark. “I accepted this position based upon
the results I observed with the company’s CLn™ BodyWash brand and what I
perceive as significant future opportunities within the company’s
pipeline. My goals are to establish TopMD Skin Care as a pharmaceutical
company that supports dermatology and dermatologists, create value for
TopMD investors and further the development of additional products in
the pipeline.”

According to Drs. Cockerell and Anwar, the OTC arena is the next key
growth area for dermatology. The company’s initial patent-pending
product line, CLnTM, a topical cleanser for
eczema, acne, folliculitis, and other skin disorders, and the bacterial
infections that often accompany and exacerbate these conditions, has
been greeted with strong receptivity. By bringing in a new CEO, with a
proven track record in OTC dermatology products, the company expects to
advance its platforms at an accelerated rate. Preliminary studies
suggest that using CLnTM BodyWash may
reduce the need for oral antibiotics in treating some common
dermatologic conditions, giving the new TopMD Skin Care team a
significant advantage as they near their full product launch, scheduled
for 2012.

BELINDA ENYONAM HENYA

The Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs (MOWAC), Mrs. Juliana Azumah-Mensah, has condemned women and parents who bleach their skins and those of their children.

She said the act is illegal and amounted to abuse of the human rights of such children, since it exposed their fragile skins to infections and skin disorders.

Mrs. Azumah-Mensah expressed worry in a speech read by Mrs. Evelyn Agyimfra, Director of Administration at MOWAC, at a re-launch of the Ghana Society of Dermatology (GSD), in Accra.

She said reports reaching the Ministry indicate an increase in reported cases of skin diseases and disorders at the various out-patient departments of health facilities across the country.

She said it is shameful that some women enhance the colour of their skins in order to be seen as beautiful and cautioned that apart from the physical effect of bleaching, some skin bleaching products could be absorbed into the body and result in ailments such as hypertension, osteoporosis, cancers, liver and kidney disorders.

Mrs. Azumah-Mensah said since children had very low immune systems and their skins were softer, applying such harsh chemicals on their skins could amount to killing them slowly.

She said some Ghanaians continued to bleach their skins despite the numerous warnings and education by the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) and other advocates on the use of cosmetics containing harmful chemicals such as hydroquinone.

Mrs. Azumah-Mensah explained that the persistent use of creams with hydroquinone results in the lightening of the skin, as it removed the outer and protective covering of the skin, and with time leaving such bleached skins with scars and much darker than they were before.

She called on stakeholders including the media to intensify advocacy on the strict enforcement on the ban of cosmetics containing hydroquinone and other harmful chemicals.

Mrs. Azumah-Mensah said MOWAC will work in collaboration with the FDB to ensure that such products found in the Ghanaian markets are seize and destroyed and vendors punished.

The President of GSD, Mrs. Magaret Lartey, said the seizure of such creams can minimize the problem. She said such chemicals would always find their way into the country as a result of the free trade between Ghana and her neighbours.

Mrs. Lartey said the Society intended to ensure healthy skins for Ghanaians through advocacy, education and training as well as ensure quality treatment of all skin disorders.

“We intend to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Services to train our members which include key practitioners such as doctors, dermatology assistants and dermatologists, to be more vibrant and resourceful to areas of the country with the most needed assistance in skin health care.”

Mrs. Lartey expressed concern about the increase in out-patient department cases across health institutions country-wide, indicating a high incidence of various skin diseases and disorders, which in most cases could be related to poor hygiene and the excessive use of cosmetics that contain harmful chemicals.

She called for the support and involvement of stakeholders to educate and inform the public on the need to maintain healthy skin and support the fight against skin bleaching in Ghana.

FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb 22, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Azam Anwar, M.D. and Clay Cockerell, M.D., founders of TopMD, Inc., a
pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, and sells
over-the-counter therapeutic skincare products, have announced that
Steve W. Clark, the former chief executive of leading U.S. dermatology
companies, Galderma Laboratories and Coria Laboratories, has joined the
company's TopMD Skin Care subsidiary as its Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Clark has over 40 years of industry experience and was widely
credited for launching well-known and highly successful skincare brands
such as Cetaphil(R) and CeraVe(R).
Bass served in
business development with Galderma Laboratories and was vice president
and treasurer of Alcon, the world's leading eye-care company.

"I am very pleased to have been appointed Chief Executive Officer of
TopMD Skin Care," said Mr. Clark. "I accepted this position based upon
the results I observed with the company's CLn(TM) BodyWash brand and what I
perceive as significant future opportunities within the company's
pipeline. My goals are to establish TopMD Skin Care as a pharmaceutical
company that supports dermatology and dermatologists, create value for
TopMD investors and further the development of additional products in
the pipeline."

According to Drs. Cockerell and Anwar, the OTC arena is the next key
growth area for dermatology. The company's initial patent-pending
product line, CLn(TM), a topical cleanser for
eczema, acne, folliculitis, and other skin disorders, and the bacterial
infections that often accompany and exacerbate these conditions, has
been greeted with strong receptivity. By bringing in a new CEO, with a
proven track record in OTC dermatology products, the company expects to
advance its platforms at an accelerated rate. Preliminary studies
suggest that using CLn(TM) BodyWash may
reduce the need for oral antibiotics in treating some common
dermatologic conditions, giving the new TopMD Skin Care team a
significant advantage as they near their full product launch, scheduled
for 2012.

California health officials have found mercury in an illegal skin-lightening cream smuggled in from Mexico.

Medical officials became alarmed when a 39-year-old Mexican-American woman in Alameda County was diagnosed with mercury poisoning, giving her headaches, numbness, depression and forgetfulness. After scouring her home for the likely culprit, they determined that the lightening cream was to blame.

Health investigators are currently going undercover in some San Francisco Bay Area ethnic communities to root out the foreign-made products whose pigment-busting ingredient can have damaging side effects.

The unlabeled jars of mercury-laced cream are typically used to lighten skin, fade freckles and age spots, as well as treat acne.

Doctors in Peru Remove 'Parasitic Twin' from Stomach of 3 Year-Old

The investigators are working with health and beauty workers in the immigrant communities of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose to hunt for the skin creams in shops and at swap meets, while encouraging families to dispose of the products safely.

The California Department of Public Health sent out a medical alert to health care professionals earlier this month, calling on them to notify the state of potential mercury poisoning cases and to ask their patients to stop using their creams.

California health officials worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to write a report in January that indicated at least 22 people in five households in California and Virginia had shared skin-lightening creams made in Mexico. Twelve people in California and 10 in Virginia had mercury in their bloodstream; the highest levels were among women who typically used the cream at least twice a day.

Officials would not release the names of the people in the study that began in 2010, saying they wanted to protect their privacy. After the study began, samples of the cream tested in Virginia showed that it contained 5 to 6 percent mercury, according to state health officials there.

The Minnesota Department of Health warned residents last year that skin lightening products being sold in African, Asian, Latino and Middle Eastern communities in the Twin Cities contained dangerous levels of mercury. The Environmental Protection Agency has warned about the presence of the heavy metal in creams sold in the Chicago area.

Venezuelan Beauty Queen Turned Breast Cancer Crusader Dies

California health officials believe there likely are many more people who are using the cream and are unaware of its dangers. The products often enter this country hidden in luggage, or are smuggled across the border. Then the creams are sold under the counter at shops and pharmacies that cater to ethnic communities whose cultural norms lean toward lighter skin as a marker of beauty.

"That is the largest incidence that we're aware of here in California," said Dr. Rupali Das, chief of the exposure assessment section at the California Department of Public Health, of the Alameda County cases.

Mercury poisoning can harm the body's nervous system and kidneys, and even affect personality, health officials say.

The CDC report found that six of those in the study had symptoms consistent with chronic exposure to mercury, including numbness, tingling, dizziness, forgetfulness, headaches and depression. All reported getting their creams either directly from Mexico or from relatives in Virginia who had purchased the creams in Mexico.

Twelve of those with mercury levels found in their urine had not used the creams, but likely were exposed to it by hands that still carried traces of the heavy metal. The youngest among those was an 8-month-old baby.

"It is most harmful on the nervous system and the kidneys and then can also cause changes in personality and a variety of other problems," said Das, a co-author of the CDC report. "We're concerned about the harmful effects that mercury can have on children. It can delay their development and they might not catch up — ever."

The mercury blocks melanin, which gives skin and hair its pigmentation.

Village of Dwarfs May Hold Clues to Cure Cancer

But even mild to moderate toxicity due to inorganic mercury can include irritability, difficulty with concentration and memory loss. Insomnia and weight loss can also be side effects and so can tingling in hands, feet or around the lips.

Some of the creams collected and analyzed by California medical officials contained mercury levels 20,000 to 56,000 parts per million. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows only trace levels of mercury in creams, or less than 1 part per million.

Latinas, Asians and Filipinas were the predominant users of the creams in California, Das said. For some members of those cultures, traditionally darker skinned people were the laborers who worked outside in the sun, she said, while lighter skin was often considered a symbol of higher social status and wealth.

The family in Alameda used unlabeled face cream in a white plastic jar that was produced in Jalisco or Michoacan, Mexico. They got the cream from a relative in Virginia who has been purchasing the jars from an individual in Mexico.

The highest mercury levels were in the woman and her 4-year-old child. The woman had 100 times the safe level.

The California Department of Public Health advisory said the woman experienced mild to moderate symptoms of tingling in her hands and lips, dizziness, forgetfulness, headaches, depression and irritability and anxiety.

Yuca Encebollada Recipe

Her 4-year-old child, whose mercury levels were 25 times higher than normal, appeared to have no serious symptoms. Investigators determined the woman used the cream twice a day and her husband once a day for about three years to fade freckles and age spots.

The CDC says inorganic mercury can be ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin; then excreted in urine, sweat and breast milk. The half-life of inorganic mercury is one to two months, so mercury levels can increase with repeated application of the creams.

"With microwave thermolysis, we now have a reliable and safe method with long-term efficacy to treat our patients who suffer from hyperhidrosis," said Dr. Michael S. Kaminer, at the Hawaii Dermatology Seminar sponsored by Skin Disease Education Foundation (SDEF).

<sup />

Dr. Michael S. Kaminer

A hyperhidrosis diagnosis is made in patients who have visible, excessive sweating for at least 6 months without apparent cause, and with at least two of the following characteristics (J. Am. Acad. Dermatol. 2004;51:274-86):

• Positive family history.

• Cessation during sleep.

In the United states, approximately 7.6 million people, or 4% of all U.S. adults, are estimated to have axillary hyperhidrosis with a level on the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) of either 3 ("My sweating is barely tolerable and frequently interferes with my daily activities.") or 4 ("My sweating is intolerable and always interferes with my daily activities."), according to Dr. Kaminer, managing partner, SkinCare Physicians, Chestnut Hill, Mass. Another 32.5 million are "sweat bothered," with an HDSS level of 2 ("My sweating is tolerable but sometimes interferes with my daily activities.") or 1 ("My sweating is never noticeable and never interferes with my daily activities.").

Axillary hyperhidrosis causes considerable distress among patients. In one survey of the Dermatology Life Quality Index, the condition scored just below atopic dermatitis, close to psoriasis, and above acne vulgaris in terms of quality of life impairment, with a mean baseline score of 10.45, compared with 11.20 for atopic dermatitis, 10.53 for psoriasis, and 7.45 for acne vulgaris (Br. J. Dermatol. 2008;159:997-1035).

Current treatment options include various topical over-the-counter products, iontophoresis, sympathectomy, botulinum toxin, ultrasound (in early trials), and now microwave thermolysis.

The proprietary microwave thermolysis system, MiraDry (Miramar Labs), focuses energy delivery to the dermal-fat interface. Microwave energy is absorbed by electric dipoles. The ion content of sweat is a perfect target for this, said Dr. Kaminer, who is also with the departments of dermatology at Yale University, New Haven, Conn.; Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.; and Brown University, Providence, R.I.

Energy becomes concentrated along this interface and creates a focal energy zone. Continuous hydroceramic cooling prevents thermal conduction of heat superficially, and creates a heat zone at the level of sweat glands resulting in thermolysis. The procedure involves injectable local anesthesia. Treatment time is about 30 minutes, with rapid recovery.

Long-term efficacy of the device was demonstrated in the DRIUP study (Dermatologic Reduction in Underarm Perspiration), in which 120 patients with HDSS scores of 3 or 4 were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to one to three active treatments (using a prior investigational version of the microwave device) or sham treatment at seven U.S. sites. Efficacy, defined as patients reporting a reduction to an HDSS score of 1 or 2, was 89% at 30 days, 74% at 3 months, 67% at 6 months, and 69% at the 9- and 12-month visits. In the sham group, efficacy was 54% at 30 days and 44% for the 3- and 6-month visits. At all time points, the differences between the treatment and sham groups were significant.

The beauty experts at Synora™ believe that the greatest breakthroughs in anti-aging rest wholly in nature, and they have searched the natural world for new ingredients in places few have ventured. They will be presenting their new products this week at a celebrity “gifting suite” hosted by The Borgnine Group. The Hollywood event features past and present Oscar winners and nominees as well as celebrities from all facets of the entertainment industry. It is perhaps the perfect place to showcase a new beauty line dedicated to botanical-based ingredients with antioxidant-rich elements that help protect skin cells and reverse the damage of age, lifestyle and environmental stressors.

The Synora™ Beauty Collection features Manuka Honey, Exotic Mushrooms, Mangosteen, Pomegranate, Wolfberry, Avocado Oil, Apple Fruit, Sea Herbs, Safflower Seed Oil, and Alfalfa Extract. Founder Synora Vievien Pattillo, tells us “My face, neck, eye, and lip applications provide powerful solutions to aging skin with exciting, new extracts and fast-acting formulations.”

Synora’s™ Night Cream hydrates, plumps, soothes and repairs the skin while their Day Cream offers a protective barrier for active lifestyles to help combat the damaging effects of the sun and our often toxic modern environment. Their very popular “Eye of the Beholder” (Gel) helps to restore the appearance of restful eyes instantly. It also reduces puffiness, dark circles, crow’s feet and dramatically diminishes the visible signs of aging around the delicate eye area.

But don’t let all the talk of dramatic results and effectiveness fool you! These products are luxurious! Their scent, color, texture and soothing sensation is nothing short of elegant! Synora’s™ entire line is reminiscent of all that is lush in nature and in the world of natural beauty … a country meadow erupting in clusters of bright flowers, a green forest shimmering after a sudden rain, a grassy hill top rolling out toward the sea.

Synora™ Beauty formulations are created by certified natural product formulators in a US-based and fully registered FDA facility right in Southern California. They are well versed in the healing properties of natural ingredients as well as the phytochemical synergy, organic biochemistry and medicinal elements of their unique botanical extracts.
